Great progress was made in Baltimore and Washington this week as hundreds of
amputees and their prosthetists, therapists, and physicians attended a
public comment meeting and a DC rally to protest the Medicare Lower Limb
LCD. Representatives of the O&P community, including NAAOP President Dave
McGill and General Counsel, Peter Thomas, attended a meeting in the HHS
Secretary's office with senior Medicare officials to convey serious concerns
with the proposed policy. CMS was responsive, acknowledged their serious
concern with the policy as written, and promised future dialogue and action.
Media from across the country covered the story. It was a great day for
amputee activism and a prime example of what can be achieved when everyone
works together. The next big goal is submission of comment letters to Dr.
Brennan at the DME MAC, the Medicare contractor responsible for collecting
public comments, by the deadline, Monday, August 31, 2015.
