List Serv,
I have an older gentleman who has been an amputee for 10 plus years. He has 2 of redundant tissue below the cut end of his tibia. He is walking on a water balloon and we are having a hard time controlling the prosthesis. He is in a pin system and has been for those 10 years, they tried suction on him before my time. The prosthesis slid off of him and he refuses to wear it again. We have tried a pin system with suspension sleeve, and he hates wearing the suspension sleeve.
I have always casted him, with the liner pushed up fully on his limb, to try and compress the tissue. That is how the current socket was made, however, after removing the prosthesis after a few hours, the liner seems to slip down, and his limb is 2 longer.
I know pin system, is probably not the best answer for redundant tissue. He does not want to have a revision to remove the extra tissue.
I just casted him, with the limb elongated to try and control the tissue that way.
How has everyone dealt with redundant tissue in the past?
