O&P List serve community,
I am responding as a member of the Amputee Coalition board of directors to some questions regarding our response to the proposed LCD. First, I would like to report that this proposal has been on our radar since the July 16th and was discussed in our board meeting July 22rd and we posted the following response on our website on July 25th.
<URL Redacted>
The Amputee Coalition believes this is a critical and concerning issue that will directly affect people with limb loss and their access to care and technology that has been the standard of care in the U.S. for many years. The radical changes that are proposed will have a devastating impact on the 2 million amputees currently living with limb loss in our country today.
The Amputee Coalition has been busy during the last week seeking advice from our medical and regulation experts, organizing our consumer response and requesting meetings with CMS and the appropriate members of congress and the senate. In addition, we have begun a social media response beginning with our Facebook page. Please like the Amputee Coalition on Facebook for access to these comments.
We have asked the leadership of the O&P organizations to meet with us today (Monday) via phone to coordinate our efforts in this area.
In the next few days please look for updates on our Web site, our Facebook page and our other social media outlets. This is extremely important so that we can put a unified and cohesive consumer effort behind defeating this proposal.
Again, let me reiterate that the Amputee Coalition leadership, board, staff and the amputees we represent recognize the negative impact on care this proposal would have, and seeing that it does not go into effect will be one of our major priorities in the next month.
Finally, as an amputee since 1987, member of this profession since 1991 and recipient of outstanding care over these years, I am tired of seeing care for amputees treated like a liability rather than an asset by insurers, private and public. My hope is that this issue will be a call to action for amputees across the country to fight against not just this LCD, but all actions that would limit the care that we depend on to lead active and productive lives.
