Hello List,

We understand there has been some concern expressed about the Amputee Coalition allowing Hanger to be one of the sponsors of First Step, and that this sponsorship could be seen as an endorsement. The Amputee Coalition has always maintained complete neutrality over the question of where a person should go for their prosthetic care. We take pride in the fact that we do not endorse one prosthetic office over another in any way, and we are very clear about that in all of our publications. We have not and will never indicate an endorsement of any kind. It is the same neutrality we show with regard to prosthetic products. We do not tell consumers to use one product over another. We make that a central theme in our certified peer visitor training sessions, it is also pointed out in inMotion magazine, in First Step, and all of our publications. The articles in First Step coach amputees on how to choose a prosthetist; to include focusing on checking credentials, and asking the right questions so one knows how well that prosthetist meets each individuals needs. We have written a special publication on this very topic along with the Academy that is included in all new amputee packets that are sent out from the Amputee Coalition.

As a non-profit organization, the Amputee Coalition offers national sponsorships that help to support our programs and services. Hanger Clinic is one of our national sponsors, which gave them the opportunity to sponsor our First Step publication. We welcome the industry representing independent offices and any prosthetic office or business wishing to become a national sponsor to contact us, and we would be happy to discuss how you could get more involved should you wish to do so. Please keep in mind that the Amputee Coalition is a non-profit organization and sponsorships are one of the major ways that we are able to support our non-profit mission and to publish the excellent materials that we provide at a very low cost. The important thing to keep in mind about First Step is that it contains valuable information for amputees in all of the articles.

In light of these concerns, we want you to know that for our next version of First Step we are looking at other options for independent prosthetic offices to be able to contribute to, and be acknowledged in First Step. We will work with our supporter independent prosthetic offices to carefully craft that future option.
