I have been using a Becker 2800SX stirrup, with the SC-30 Stirrup Strut
welded to reinforce. He continues to break these. Anything more heavy duty
than this out there?

First, just a bit more clinical info on this guy. Well north of 300 lbs,
CMT, this ankle is plantarflexed 60 deg, and at least 45 deg into varus. A
conventional AFO is not what he needs. He came to me 5 years ago with
custom shoes, and a conventional AFO attached...massive ulcer over lateral
malleolus. I immediately put him in a CROW. Will only wear the CROW around
house, claims he can't drive with it. What he really needs is probably
surgery...he is basically unbraceable, but I continue to fix up his old
conventional AFO. It is rockered (as some suggested). So, all I was
looking for was the most heavy duty stirrup out there...here are a few
ideas....

I have had a similar patient that kept breaking everything I tried. The
solution we finally arrived at was to double up the stirrups (we used a long
tongue stirrup from Trulife as it seemed to be a little heavier duty than
the Becker) and have them welded together at a local welding shop. He has
not broken it since. Which has been over a year. My patient is 6'6 and
325 lbs. We also could not find rivets strong enough to hold so we use 16D
common framing nails. Hope this works for you.

I had a spinal cord injury patient that could break everything... Except a
stirrup I would get from Rancho Los Amigos medical center. The bends in the
stirrup were about 6 long. I was told there was only one guy that could
bend the stirrup. I provided them with the sole width of the shoe. It must
have weighed two pounds

In the past ive hade similar problem when I hade to take 2 stirrups and bend
one around the other cut off the pivot area of the outside stirrup and weld
the stirrups together then install in the shoe if I can help contact me or

This is a quick response, but need info on shoe design. the base is very
important to better give you ideas. But, I bet the fact of proper footwear
is the most important. I even have to add some designs like you are
considering to Asolo glacier boots, yes this is extreme, but works great.
Use the upper end back packing boots also by Asolo or the like, such as the
TPS520 from asolo.

The boot will reduce the stress significantly.

I will weld two stirrups together unless I get any better ideas. Thanks
