We currently have an above knee amputee who is receiving his first prosthesis and has inquired if there is any way to have an equestrian prosthesis. Does anyone have experience with above knee prosthesis using for riding horses? What have you done to accommodate this and what has been successful and/or unsuccessful?
The patient is an above knee amputee due to osteosarcoma, age 26, and active K3. He has a very long residual limb (cut just above condyles with patellar graft to end of femur) and in limb length and presentation is extremely similar to a knee disarticulation (ie components limited). He has previous experience riding horses and has attempted it without a prosthesis but described it as awkward.
I would appreciate any input you have regarding this type of extracurricular activity while using an AK prosthesis.
