I am astonished to read the statistics that state that 94 percent of claims identified as overpayments were not appealed. Between 2010-2011, RAC's recouped over $1.3 billion. Of that $1.3 billion, $135 million was returned to providers. Only 6% of those RAC's were appealed, yet $135 million dollars was still repaid to providers. That is huge. If every single one of us appealed each audit, the total amount returned to providers would likely be $1.3 million and these aggressive and unreasonable audits would stop.
I continue to urge all of us to not only fight these unreasonable audits, but to fight for the integrity and preservation of our profession.
