Dear Colleagues,
As an update to Ivan Long's CP(E) memorial posting
Dear Colleagues,
As an update to Ivan Long's CP(E) memorial posting of 8.7.13, I'd like to share
Carole Harper's email address: <Email Address Redacted> All messages that were sent to me have been
forwarded but feel free to send a direct communication. It will be appreciated. I first met Carole when visiting Ivan and she
was equally instructive on the topic of gait analysis and I remember Ivan
interjecting let him figure it out, while I was walking in the
hallway, apparently ascertaining correctly that I was a somewhat slow
student. When inquiring about times in
the 1960's, Ivan would remark that was BC, as in Before Carole, so
that should give some clue to her appreciation and contribution. Understand when you send a note, you are
sending it to family.
Ivan's memorial
service will be held at the address below. If sending flowers, they should arrive during the Saturday office hours
posted below.
Memorial service: Saturday 8-17-13 from 6 to 10 PM.

Dear Colleagues,
The O&P field has lost one of its greats. Today the news was
shared that that Ivan Long,
CP(E) has passed. He was
91. For those of you that sent birthday wishes
last year, of which over 100 people did, Carole
Harper's email address is in
your address book or system. For
those practitioners that knew Ivan, or
know of Ivan, please reach out to her and share
a note or just a story. If
you don't have her email address, I would be
more than honored to make sure
that she receives your messages.
I'll share this story: I learned gait analysis in one afternoon with
Ivan. Watching videos and
walking in his home was more valuable than all
the mandatory classes and
course work I received at
school. When I work with a patient or just
randomly watching people walk in an airport, I
acknowledge and value his
teaching.
It is with absolute certainty that I say that Ivan Long's work will be
rediscovered in the
future. Perhaps something that can't
be recreated or captured will be his
unique talent and skill. We may have
microprocessor knees and bionic ankles
but if I had a family member requiring an AK
limb, and I could pick the
ideal configuration irrespective of realistic
limits, I'd pick an exo limb
with a Mauch SNS made by Ivan Long in 1984.
Today is a sad day.
