Hello again colleagues and guests.
The O&P website that I spoke about recently has now been launched. To
get a glimpse of what and where this is going, you can now go to
www.oandpsolutions.org to see the starting data that is connected to the
site. The site is in its infancy, so data will be sparse until we get
contributors. I posted a recent letter that I wrote to Kathleen Sebelius
so folks can get an idea about where I am coming from regarding some of
the current problems associated with O&P. As I mentioned in an earlier
post, now is the time get to the bottom of these issues and from my
perspective, we have very little to lose and much to gain if we take
these issues to heart and do something with them. Hopefully, we will
develop case files that can be used effectively as we approach these
problematic issues. But of course HIPPA protected data cannot be posted
unless there are accompanying legal releases. In many cases, I hope that
we can get our patients/clients/customers to help us with the problems
we are facing. I also believe we may be able to illustrate some of the
disparity in economic standards that have been implemented by federal
and/or state agencies. There is so much information that needs to be on
this site, I can only hope that we are successful in bringing enough of
the important information to light that it helps us achieve our purpose.
As you can see at the website, categories and subcategories will be
used to help us dial in on the pertinent areas. Things will get tweaked
a bit as we go along, but the general idea is evident at the site now. I
am not opposed to changing categories, etc., as we go along, provided it
makes sense. Please note that this website is not intended to replace or
interfere with Paul Prusakowski's listserve system. It's purpose is to
help us get to the bottom of administrative and professional issues that
may be controversial at times, but nevertheless need examined.
The hope is that orthotists, prosthetists, O&P administrators, and folks
from our associations will contribute to the site in a meaningful way.
As most of us know, things that can't be said inside the beltway for
fear of ticking off the wrong party, can certainly be aired on the other
side of the beltway where most of us sit.
For now, you will see two contact names, but those are just for
starters. As we get responsible volunteers involved with this site and
project, new names for contact, etc., will be added to the site.
From my perspective, we are entering very troubling times for our O&P
businesses and, unless we act effectively, the outcome will likely not
be good for many of our smaller mom and pop facilities. For that matter,
it won't be positive for the big guys either.
Now, let's see how many O&P folks out there are really serious about
getting a sinking ship up-righted.
