Hi All,
I am looking for *factual *interpretation of diagnosis code 897.6, for a
bilateral amputee. Long desicription from www.icd9data.com states:
Traumatic amputation of leg(s) (complete) (partial), bilateral [any
level]), without mention of complication
My understanding has always been that DME for a Bilateral Amputee would
include 2 prosthetic feet (Symes/Boyd --> proximal). The peer reviewed
research seems to justify this interpretation. However, with this vague
description, it seems one can justify 2 pinky toe amputations with the same
ICD-9.
In addition, please correlate this coding with K-Levels when we consider
bilateral amputees as a K4 functional level. Is this as far from b&w as
our L-coding?
Insight please. Thanks in advance.
