Dear colleagues,
Original post questioned as to what level of amputations are included in
897.6, bilateral leg amputation. for those interested, it was pointed
out that at www.findacode.com< <URL Redacted>>
one
foot and other leg is included in the long description of 897.6. See
below:
- *897.6* - Traumatic amputation of leg(s) (complete) (partial);
bilateral [any level], without mention of complication, *One foot and
other leg*
It was also pointed out that there are codes for bilateral foot
amputations, complete or partial, and separate codes for toe amputations,
see below:
- *896.2* - Traumatic amputation of foot (complete) (partial);
bilateral, without mention of complication
- *895.0* - Traumatic amputation of toe(s) (complete) (partial); without
mention of complication
*Therefore, it appears that a partial foot and leg or transmet and
transtibial is the most distal level of amputations considered for our use
of code 897.6. *
*
*
May i point out that
CMS.gov< <URL Redacted>>list
of icd9 coding excludes One
foot and other leg from 897.6 long description.
As for L-Coding, it was pointed that the only verbage on the issue from
medicare says that< <URL Redacted>>,
*it is recognized, within the functional classification hierarchy, that
bilateral amputees often cannot be strictly bound by functional level
classifications.*
*This feedback is simply interpretation of the coding before us, not to be
interpreted as fact or recommendation, of course.
*also, my apologies and corrections offered for using DME to describe our
work and trade, i support our fight!!
Sincerely,
