Hello all.
I hope to find acquaintances of Johnnie Yocham out there...And NO, he's not
dead! He's as healthy as he has always been, even now at 71.
My name is Kevin Matthews. I am a proud Army trained orthotist. I
was formerly known as SSG Kevin C. Matthews, US Army, NCOIC of the Orthotic and Prosthetic Lab, Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. I am a certified orthotist and have been since 1994. The only reason I was able to become certified was due in a great part to the efforts of my friend,
mentor, and now co-worker, Johnnie Yocham. I am blessed with a love for
this profession and this man started it, way back in 1982 for me.
I want to pay a tribute to one of my heroes. I want to create a webpage
dedicated to him. I am looking for quotes from former students, co-workers,
friends...I would like to include thoughts from those that have memories to
share. I would like there to be a digital memorial, throughout infamy, to a
true contributor to this great profession. .Very brief history for those
that aren't familiar with Johnnie.
Back in the seventies the Army decided to open a school for orthotics.
Johnnie had recently retired and moved away, but heard about and was
awarded the position. He contacted ABC and together they worked out a
course structure that would be accredited by ABC as a certified long
course. Basically equivalent to an AS degree, all dedicated subjects. He
graduated as many as 25 board eligible orthotists a year, and there were
many years. There are many practicing orthotists' lives he has impacted,
made better by having that certificate, and enjoyed learning under his
remarkable tutelage.
Johnnie works with me now and I truly enjoy his company. I hope those that
have experiences will share them. I know a bunch of you guys! Send me a
note.
Thanks All! Thanks Paul!
