Thank you to everyone that responded. I did not receive any negative
feedback on laser hair removal from residual limbs and two positive comments
from amputees.
..
I had that procedure done on my own leg a few about 5 years ago. It was a
process to have it done, taking about 6 treatments total. It is a little
painful, or uncomfortable I guess at times, but it was worth it.
During the first 6 years after the amputation, I had 4 bad episodes of an
ingrown hair problem, requiring medical treatments and minor surgical
interventions, which resulted in 7-10 days being off my leg. Since the hair
removal process, I have had no more issues with that.
The process will not eliminate ALL hair growth, but just the darker hair. I
still have the soft, white/blond hairs that will grow, but I trim them
occasionally with an electric trimmer, keeping them short. But again, it is
very much worth doing.
The patient should first consult with a good facility that does hair
removal, and be willing to pay for it too. I think mine ended up costing me
about $1500-2000 in all. But the patient needs to ask if the procedure will
even benefit her at all. If her hair is already soft and light colored, it
might not do any good for her.
I hope this helps.
...
I am an AK and have had laser hair removal with no issues. In the beginning
I did not wear my leg immediately after the treatment for about an hour.
The investment in the treatment was well worth it.
...
When dealing with any surgical procedure your patient must first consult the
physician who is going to do the procedure to be sure that as an amputee
there are no adverse effects that might cause changes to her residuum. If
the patient is wearing a silicone liner, it can be even more important
because when a liner is applied to the skin the pores are sealed and may
become irritated from both the procedure as well as the liner. In the past I
have used a liner/liner sock for a period of time after the procedure to
reduce the shear and friction of the liner on the skin.
They are available from Knit Rite and Comfort

I have a female transtibial patient asking if there are any issues with
having laser hair removal on a transtibial residual limb. Having no
personal experience with this I thought to ask the list.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I will repost replies and edit out names unless the person specifically
states it is ok to repost with their name.
