Thank you too Al Pike and Dr. Christina Skoski...
I also agree that some of the more advanced upper and lower limb prosthetic
component designs are moving away from achieving a more aesthetically and
anatomically pleasing custom sculptured prosthesis and thus making it more
difficult to achieve this most important goal in the design of a
prosthesis.
I have always stressed that the aesthetics of a prosthesis is truly one
of the most important functions of the prosthesis to the majority of
those absent a limb. You only have to encounter one individual who is absent a
single finger on their had to appreciate this fact and the psychological
impact of their loss or disability to them!
I also appreciate and understand that Beauty Is In The Eye Of The
Beholder and if someone willingly chooses, for whatever reason, to wear a
prosthesis without a well sculptured cover of some type... that is their choice
and it should be respected, not condoned!
We can thank those who have designed more advanced high tech components
for bringing prosthetic limbs and those that wear them, especially for
athletic purposes, out of the closet and into the public eye! It has clearly
raised the awareness of able body individuals of what someone can achieve in
life, despite the absence of a limb! I also feel it has definitely
improved the personal self image of someone who is absent a limb and thus their
confidence in wearing a prosthesis and utilizing it to the best of their
abilities!
I can personally remember my first high tech energy storing Seattle
Lightfoot with 5 sculptured toes on it and how good it made me feel in public
walking on a sandy beach with my new 5 toed foot! Even the imprint in the
sand made put a smile on my face!!
Regardless, in our practice we still provide custom designed and sculpted
hybrid prostheses to 99% of those individuals relying on our care and are
proud of our technical abilities and skills to do so! Likewise, we are
proud of the 1% who choose to go without a custom sculptured and skinned
cosmetic cover!
For what is worth!... That's my two cents!
