Original Post:

79 y.o. female, heart condition, can not have surgery to correct left
knee instability, primarily - home ambulation with a cane

Bottom line: she would like to try a very light weight, non bulky,
easily applied/removed, single upright/joint knee orthosis that resists
knee valgus.

Suggestions?

Hi ed,

Its Jason. Try the unloader one from Ossur - custom or prefab.

OAK knee orthosis. best unloader i have ever seen. same company who
makes ToeOff and Bluerocker. absolutely best anf fits every single of
your requirments. problem is - can't have it in the US anymore. it did
not catch the market and they quit importing it from Sweden.

matter of fact, i have one sitting here on the shelf for who knows how
long. R small. weighs 0.5 Lb!! i just weighed it. you can have it if
it's the right side/size. just replace 2 screws, i stripped them fooling
with it while back.

townsend has a pretty light weight and adjustable ko

Ossur has a light weight unloader. Your Ossur rep. Should be able to get
you a sample to try then buy if it works.

Unloader One would be a nice orthosis for this situation...keep in mind
height and weight...to much of either and the orthosis is limited in its
control

Hi Ed,
I have a lot of success with a very simple hinged neoprene knee brace
from Benek. It has two side hinges and does not unload the knee but
it provides good ml stability and often that is enough to relieve the
pain. I usually measure 6, 3 inches above the knee, at kc, and 3, 6
inches below the knee and have them custom made. Fit great. Have them
put in the darlex diamond in the popliteal area for more comfortable
sitting. It's a piece of spandex that holds the brace together but is
very flexible so the back doesn't bunch up when sitting.

Hello Ed

Why not make one?

I find the systems that I fabricate, fit and function the best.

Good luck

I used the dj ortho OPAL light, not too bad and if applied right, seems

to actually work. Moderately bulky.

hi ed,

hope that you are doing well

--don't know about he easily applied part, but a gII fits the other
criteria

take care

I've had good luck with Townsend's Softforce OA brace for exactly this
kind of patient.
