Below are the various cast saw responses. I deleted the names of the
respondents. To summarize, many people love their Swissex for the
low noise and cord-free battery operation. Fein seems to be the low
cost alternative to the Stryker. Thanks to all who responded.

i bough
t a battery operated Swissex waterproof cast saw from Friddle's
Orthopeadic that has been great. After I bought my personal one, the
Rehab Institute of Chicago bought one, and we love them. We get
multiple days on one charge (at least a week or so). Its very quiet
and cuts right through fiberglass with ease. Its small and kids call
it the tickle machine. I save time not finding an outlet, and
without the extra power and weight of the stryker, i don't cut
through my cut out strips. Hope this helps.
FEIN check the P-O archive, no new features, but durable and cheap.
The Swissex saw is very quiet and battery operated. I would
reccomend it. I would reccomend shopping around a little online, as
they are far more expensive from the regular suppliers, like friddles.
Friddle's sell a battery powered one that works well on the fly. I
have had it a few years and it gets the job done. In the lab however,
we have all but quit using the cast saw. We mostly use cordless
jigsaws and reciprocating saws when cutting stuff off of plaster
molds. The blades are much cheaper and the saws are much faster than
the noisy vibrating cast saw.
Chris, depending on how your plan to use the cast saw, there may
be another option for you.
Although it's not quiet, the air powered cast saws are a lot cheaper
to buy and they last forever, if you keep water out of them.
Another option is the battery power variety. I think that Friddles
sells one that's pretty quiet (Swissex?) and you can take it anywhere
(rechargable) but it ain't cheap.
Good luck in your search. Please post the results so we can all learn
if there's another good alternative.
Chris,
That is a fabulous question, have you ever seen the Oscimed 2000.
This cast
saw has some additional benefit without the added cost.
The most important is the exceptionally low noise level 62 decibils.
The
Oscimed is no louder than a desk fan. This feature makes it ideal
for small
offices (low noise levels), pediatric ( no more crying children) busy
offices ( it is ergonomically shaped smaller for easier holding.)
and it
comes complete with plastic carrying case and 2 blades.
For $1365.00 plus
free shipping
Don't waste your money on another Stryker. Get a FEIN with a
blade that will last a year and a cord that is about 20 feet long...
all for a third the cost of the Stryker.
