Listserv,

There is a patient that requires his Bowden cable to be replaced every three to
four weeks. He is an active, heavy-duty user and has bilateral upper extremity
amputations. He has a transradial amputation on one side and a shoulder
disarticulation on the other. He currently wears a shoulder cap and
conventional transradial prosthesis. The harness includes a chest strap to
secure the shoulder cap and modified figure 8, connected to the cap, to suspend
and control the transradial prosthesis. The excessive cable wear may be
related to poor alignment of the cable system or harness design. We are in
the process of a replacing this gentleman’s entire prosthetic system and would
like to improve the life span of the cables in the new design. We encourage all
suggestions and/or clinical experiences that may help in this matter. If
possible, please include a diagram for visual reference.

Thank you,
