Dear Associates and Colleagues,
I have noticed something recently that is beginning to bug me and wanted
to ask if anyone has noticed any small insects that seem to emerge from
modified plaster casts. A BOC acquaintance who is also a certified pest control
technician advised me that these little segmented invertebrate arachnids are
called plaster mites, that they feed on phosphate and calcium and that, if
left untreated, could consume an entire plaster lab. He also stated that they
smuggle themselves into the United States from France, where all plaster of
Paris comes from and that France may be deliberately introducing them into
bags of plaster to infest other countries. Is this why the French scratch so
much? Possibly the only way to eliminate these plaster mites is to mix up
10-20 pounds of diamataceous earth into our supplies of plaster de' Paree' and
thus put an end to this scourge before it's too late for us all. If anyone has
any similar experiences or would like to offer their comments, please feel
free to do so.
