Hi,
I was glad to stumble across this forum today because I have a lot of
questions. First, a bit about myself. I am a 52 year old woodworker who
has specialized in custom furniture building for most of my life. I
learned the trade from my father, and have basically grown up in the
family business. A chance meeting with an old friend, who had an
encounter with an automobile while he was riding his motorcycle,
introduced me to the world of prosthetics about 2 years ago. It was then
that my interest in prosthetics began, and since then we have been
experimenting in my shop with making some new legs that have been
fashioned from various combinations of wood and materials we have been
dabbling with from some of his old prostheses. Although I haven’t really
been able to get one to ‘fit just right’, I have seriously been
considering changing directions in life and getting involved more in
prosthetics to use my talents to better help others.
I consider myself good with my hands, and pretty much have been able to
pick up whatever I needed to just by watching others and learning by
doing, and think that I can probably master this craft within a few
years.
Are there any home study guides available? Are there any weekend seminars
that I can attend? Is going to a technical/professional school a
requirement to work in the business? I have seen different certifications
available through the internet, and licenses (not in my state though),
are they actually required to open a prosthetics business if I wanted to
start working with a few customers that may want my services? Are there
any special permits that one would need for this occupation? How do I get
paid by insurance for this work? Is it possible? Do I need really need
to be an MD?
I appreciate your feedback, and if anyone in the Las Vegas area is
offering an apprenticeship, I would be very interested in spending a
couple of days a week learning the trade.
Thank you for your help,
Henry Brindle
