Contact the AAOP or RIC (Rehab Institute of Chicago). Both have
multiple booklets available.
-----------------------------------------------------
There is a booklet by ACA called First Steps (if I remember correctly!) It
was my bible when I first became an amputee. I hope this helps
-------------------------------------------------------
Checkout Northwestern's patient publications
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------
Northwestern sells a booklet called Pre-prosthetic Care for the BK Amputee
and one for the AK amputee. The Amputee Coalition of America has a magazine
that comes out once every year called First Step. The Academy prints 2
booklets, one is called, For the New Amputee and the other is Pateint
Care Booklet for Below Knee Amputees (or Above Knee).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
I read your post regarding a patient handbook that you and the people at
your facility would like to develop. The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA)
has two very good resources that you may find extremely helpful in your
endeavor. Our First Step magazine is a resource guide for adapting to limb
loss and covers all of the subjects you listed in your post (emotional,
physical, prosthetic, etc.). First Step is available by itself and is also
included as part of the ACA's Because We Care patient packet. If you're
interested in any of these products, please feel free to investigate further
on the ACA website (< <URL Redacted>>) and in the flyer I
have attached to this Email.
You may also wish to visit the National Limb Loss Information Center's
online library. There's a tutorial that will walk you through the library
search process and expose you to everything that we have housed there. This
includes all aspects of limb loss. The tutorial will also show you how to
refine your search to return the most pertinent information results. You can
search the library by pointing your browser to the following URL:

Call United Amputee Services Assoc. Inc They have a great booklet called
the Survivors Guide for the Recent Amputee
I was eventually able to get it for our patients at the VA hospital in
Houston and it has been received well. It doesn't cover everything you
mentioned but it is a good start and you could supplement it.
Call them for pricing and more info

There is a demo version of the program including information to the
patients.
It's developed from the protocol that we introduced in our hospital as a
standard procedure in 1995. You can also find article about it in the ISPO
International Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (see below). In the
article the procedure is descript and the results as well. It's important to
use the same definition to be able to compare results.
Good luck in your important work.
---------------------------------------------------------
You can Purchase them through Rehab Institute of Chicago or ABC. I am sorry
that I do not have the #. If you have trouble finding them contact me and I
can look it up.

We just overhauled our handbook. The old one was not thought satisfactory
mainly due to poor readability and excessive detail. We surveyed some
patients before we changed too much and found most people wanted info but
did not want to be overloaded with detail. Our handbook now ( and we are a
public rehab hospital) describes what to expect from rehab, the team
involved, the environment, support services, post discharge follow up, self
care etc.
More concrete info, for example types of prosthesis, can be supplied by
request by the seperate therapies. This partly reflects the fact that about
30% of our pts are non-prosthetic. we were advised to keep our readability
score(it can be got through Microsoft Word) to about Grade 7 level. This
takes account of average literacy levels, age, non English speaking
backgrounds, being unwell etc.
Hope this helps.

Contact ACA for the First Steps Book and subscribe to In Motion which is
also Published by ACA.
Here is a link to get you started. http://www.amputee-coalition.org/
This is a great organization and has benefited many of my patients as well
as a great resource for all your staff.
Let me know how you make out.
------------------------------------------------------------
Call the Academy. They have (AK and BK) phamplet/brochures by Jack
Ullendahl that we use. We also provide booklets by the Amputee Coalition,
along with our own mission statement in a company folder. Good Luck.
------------------------------------------------------------
RIC in Chicago (312)238-2859 has THE BEST post-op rehab guide for
patients I've seen (AK & BK), it's fantastic. Be warned however, when
you call they'll likely have you leave a message with their book store
and they rarely call back. Be persistent.
Cheers,
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Academy has them.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I would be interested in viewing anything you find out on this. We have
been contemplating this also.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Check with Northwestern's school. They offer a lot without the
advertising found in some publications. Their free magazine,
Capabilities, is also excellent and ad free.

The ACA has a packet of info called We Care which includes the First
Step guidebook that I find very comprehensive. The cost is minimal, and
includes a copy of In Motion magazine and info about the ACA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are a few websites that you may find very helpful. Please let me know
if I can provide you with additional information. Some of my clients also
get their brochures from AOPA.
Hope you have a great day!
