I would like to ask Mr. Griffin what his back-ground is? He states that he
has been in the field for about 10 years. Well, I have been in the field
since 1992. I have been to an accredited O&P school and have taken my ABC
exams. Now, lets assume that he is not just another monkey that his
company trained to fit OTS orthosis or even the fit from measurements. Lets
assume that he has extensive training in the field of orthotics and that he
is board certified. GOOD for him. BUT, how many of the reps are like Mr.
Griffin? I will only tell you this... Reps that market to us and that show
up at least once a month are loyal to use and we to them. Reps that show
themselves once every 6-12 months come in and act like they are the cats
meow, and I don't like cats.... I won't comment on the companies names, but
they are on the NOMA list. I once had a company come and market their K.O.
They had a neat little device to trace around the leg. I asked for one of
the devices to trace and they said sure. The next day I went to the P.T.
Depart. to see a Pt. and there was one of the devices on the floor....My
reaction was not to order ANYTHING from them and that was 8 years ago.... I
bet that I haven't, unless asked for by a patient or referral, spent $10
grand from that Company....Another case in point. I had a rep that went
straight to the Ortho's, billed the patient's directly... He was doing this
for years, then had the audacity to come to my office to market a new
line.... PLEASE.....I DO agree with Mr. Griffin on treating our
Doc's/referrals with respect and courtesy... If I have a question regarding
an order and feel that their patient would benefit from something else, I
call and convey my professionally educated opinion.
Regarding the other's that can do ox's. Lets see: P.T's, they had an O
and P class is school, probably had an O and P instructor for a 3-6 hour
class, can go to d week-end warriors
seminars to learn about/casting/fitting FO's, KO's, and whatever else......
They bill using our L-codes and an office visit.... That's up coding in my
opinion.... Anyway, I was trained by a P.T. in my school, soooooo, couldn't
I go to P.T. lecture's, a few seminars and then I could start billing for
P.T.??????? O.K, just kidding but wouldn't it be interesting if we could??
Chiropractors, I would rather go to a P.T., but they do fit FO's, LSO's and
TLSO's. Once again, I think that they use the L=-codes and charge for an
office visit....Maybe ABC, BOC, AAOP and all the other O&P lobbyist should
maybe convey to the Senate about that fact.... Or, maybe they already have..
To bad that we don't get posts on such matters
Recently I just found out that the North Dakota Legislature passed a new
bill that allows PT's to cover ALL O&P devices.. Shame on us up here in N.D.
for not knowing that they were pushing something like this thru... Shame on
the O&P industry for fighting amongst ourselves (ABC Vs. BOC) and allowing
something like this to transpire. Where was AAOP, AOPA, ABC, BOC, or
anybody else that is suppose to know about all of these Legislature
things?????? To busy pissing and moaning and slamming each other. Which
state is next? South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon might be next. I am
only guessing, but since these state's are not that very populated and more
that likely have more PT's than O&P personnel, it might be wise to be ready
for them!! I don't get the PT's. First they battle the chiropractor, DPM's
and us. What's next, nurses that have been trained in wound care and
thennnnn, maybe Physical Medicine?? Just think, they have Doctorate Degrees
( good for them ), so that could be in the plan!! They already want to write
their own orders ( self- referral ) so this might be in the mix. Just food
for thought... Don't get me wrong, I have very good referral's that are
PT's and have NO plans to do O&P. These PT's!! can't understand the APTA
either!! I feel that State Licensure would help across the board!! EVERY
State should have it implemented and get their respective congressman-woman
on-board to help not only us, but the patients as well. And lets find a way
to unite. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. While ABC and BOC continue to fight, APTA is
establishing deeper in-roads into the legal system.
Now, let the banter begin
