We recieved a unusual but heartfelt story from a bilateral amputee whom is
also 24 year old paraplegic female from St. Paul , Minnesota, Stephanie
Mc Elmury.
I thought her story would interest you and to thank OWW one of our
corporate sponsors , and Al Pike CPO, for helping us with her request.
At the age of 15 years old Stephanie broke her back in a truck accident and
was permanently paralyzed from the waist down, and unable to walk.Four years
later , her legs had to be amputated as the result of sores that would not
heal. She coped well with becoming paralyzed for four years but the loss of
her legs as resulted in her to slide into depression and is suffering
emotionally from the loss of her legs primarily caused by allot of stares
and rude questions regarding her stumps .
Her insurance provide r will not pay for cosmetic legs because she cant
walk.Having legs is not about walking its about feeling whole. She didnt
require expensive prosthetics. We had two previous donated OWW feet that
are sized correctly, that were provided us some time ago and left over from
one of our third world assistance efforts.Alvin Pike CP in Minnesota
donated his services and made her cosmetic legs at no cost.
Today, Stephanie remains paralyzed but according to her, the rude staring
occurs allot less often while wearing her new cosmetic legs.
She often wears high heels. Is loss of limb more devastating than being
paralyzed from the waist down?
I dont think so.
Each Friday we will send a post and similar salute to a person or Hope Donor
whom has made a great difference in a life.
Such Whole Again stories hopefully will help make your weekend and to remind
you, knowing that most of you whom became professionals and industry
providers, got into this business to help people, that you are accomplishing
allot and are appreciated.
Have a great weekend,
