For some time we have been donating used orthotic and prosthetic
devices, components and occasionally materials to the World
Rehabilitation Fund in New York. From my understanding the World Rehab
Fund sorted though the products and sent them to third world
countries.
We received a letter stating that they no longer are accepting
materials
and in fact refused the last shipment.
Does anyone know of any organizations that will accept these types of
materials? If so please pass that information along. It troubles us to
think these items won't put to some greater good and will have to be
discarded.
Thank you,
Chris Casteel, RTO

I am one of the students in the O&P program at EMU who came out to
UMOPC during the fall semester. Although, your goal is to supply those
who are in need, I would be willing to pick up anything you might
think
could be of used as a teaching tool for the EMU program. Good luck in
your search. If you choose to send some things our way just let me
know.

We applaud your efforts to reuse components and hope to have that
information
available in the new Humanitarian Database being developed by the
Digital
Resource Foundation for the O&P Community.
Pleasego to the database site at www.drfop.org and check through the
current
listing to see who needs donations of materials. Also, please let us
know if
you are aware of other organizations which are engaged in humanitarian
work by
putting simple org name and contact information on the form so we can
follow
up with them and verify complete data for the database.
Let me know how this works and if you have any suggestions on how to
improve
this information. Please forward mail to this address <Email Address Redacted>
The
more input we get the more comprehensive information can be available
for
searching.

I would recommend the non-profit organization Children of the
Americas. They are a great group that provides O&P care (among other
medical, surgical services) to the people of Guatemala. If you are
interested, I would refer you to Wayne Cottle of Center For Orthotic
and Prosthetic Care-Shriners Hospital--Lexington, KY
( <Email Address Redacted> , 859/268-5649).

I'm sure the Barr Foundation will be able to use them or will know

who can.

Physician's for Peace, headquartered out of Richmond,
VA would kindly accept these components. I joined the
group and went on my first mission with the group to
the Dominican Republic last year. Their goal is to
provide sustainable solutions for developing
countries. The walking free program was set up about
5 years ago and has set up facilities in Turkey, and
the Dominican Republic. It was amazing what I saw
people walking on, and what a difference a good parts
make. We especially need any upper extremity
prosthetic components you might have. You can
