I have been delighted to receive thoughtful and very helpful responses to my previous message on the listserv; however, it has become quite clear that many people have not heard about ACA's recent announcement that we are leading a campaign to address the access to care issues facing people with limb loss (PWLL).
Briefly, we are approaching this as a national health problem--lack of access to appropriate care is putting PWLL at risk of all the secondary conditions associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
The ACA is actively partnering with interested organizations to chart a course for establishing national goals to address the serious health issues facing PWLL and to identify solutions to improve their health and quality of life. This long-term initiative requires a comprehensive strategy with multiple approaches, including communications and public awareness; reimbursement for appropriate care; rehabilitation and prosthetics; and, related public policy advocacy.
In collaboration with national partners, which include but are not limited to AAOP, AOPA, BOC, NCOPE, Ossur, and Otto Bock, the ACA is undertaking a multi-stage approach to address access to prosthetic care issues. During phase I, currently underway, coalition members are collecting data to support the aims of the plan and develop a National Action Plan for Access Among Individual with Limb Loss. During Phase II, we will develop implementation strategies that include advocacy, building grassroots support, and enhancing communications to policy makers and the public.
The ACA has taken the lead in this initiative; however, we realize that we cannot be successful without the support of individuals, businesses, health care providers, and organizations with an interest in PWLL.
On behalf of the ACA and our coalition members, I urge all those who have a stake in the successful outcome of this initiative to become involved. . We will continue to provide periodic updates of this campaign on the O&P listserv and the ACA's Web site. If you would like further information about this initiative, please contact me, Paddy Rossbach, at <Email Address Redacted> or Leslie Duncan at <Email Address Redacted> or call the ACA office at 1-888-267-5669.
