I was glad to see you post on this listserve. I am a CP in
Indiana, own my
own business, a small business. I have been doing this for about
one year
now, and have been very busy and have been very successful this
past year.
Each month seems to get busier and better. It has taken a lot of
work to get
it to this point, many late evenings, weekends, etc. But it is
worth it all.
I am going to the Dominican Republic on Jan 21st (in two weeks)
and will be
there 2 weeks seeing patients, casting, measuring and making
check sockets
there. Then I am bringing the check sockets back to my office,
fabricating
the sockets and putting the limbs together, feet, pylons, knees,
etc. I am
not sure what I will do at that point, I can either ship the
legs back to
the DR to a prosthetist there that I know, and he will do the
final fitting
and alignment and deliver them, or I might go back for a week in
March to
fit them. I will be using his office in Santo Domingo to see the
patients
and to fabricate the check sockets. He is more than happy to let
me use his
place so that I can help some people.
I lived in the DR from 1984-86, when I was in my late teens,
early 20's and
so I know the country pretty well, and speak spanish fluently.
(I was born
and raised in Indiana, went to college out west, and prosthetics
program in
Los Angeles, CA).
So what I am getting at here is that if you need to send some
old parts
somewhere and want to get rid of them, you can send them here to
my office
and I will make sure that they get put to good use in the
Dominican
Republic.
The long term goal that I have is to start an outreach program
that will be
ongoing in the Dominican Republic. I have aslo contacted CURE
International,
they just opened a childrens hospital in Santo Domingo also. I
have not
gotten a firm commitment from them yet, but I hope to have one
soon, like
tomorrow. If that works out as I hope it does, I will be seeing
some
children there to make limbs for. When I lived there, it was
very common to
see anywhere from 5 - 10 amputees a day on crutches or skate
board devices
scooting aroung the sidewalks and down the streets. There are
literally
thousands of amputees there that can't get anything.
If you need me to pay shipping, I will do that. I have an
account with UPS
and will pay for the shipping. I would just need to know the
dimensions of
the box, and the weight.
My address is: 321 E. Winslow Rd, Bloomington, IN 47401. Phone
is toll free
877-436-5347
My web site is www.prostheticsindiana.com which also has an
email link to me
also.
Thanks,
Jim DeWees, CP
