The recent Medicare reform legislation that includes a Medicare payment
freeze for all orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) services for the next three
years will have a negative impact on the O&P field in the near term.
Then, beginning in 2007, a less onerous competitive bidding program
limited to off-the-shelf orthotic devices will be implemented. Long
term, the implementation of quality standards will be an asset for the
O&P industry.
