I have been interested in trying to create this kind of International
Amputation Surgery Symposium but it obviously needs the cooperation of
several established groups.I know there are many surgeons who would be
interested, as well as prosthetists and therapists.

Ideally it would be an interdisciplinary symposium so that surgeons,
prosthetists and therapists could share their perspectives and reinforce the
necessity and nightmares of poorly done amputation surgeries, and the
benefits of properly done amputations. In addition I would like to see
discussion and perspectives about the advisability of symes vs. BK
amputation, and AK vs. KD amputations. This conference is long overdue and I
would encourage those with the ability to make it happen to work toward that
goal.

If the AAOP and the Academy of Surgeons and the Physical and
Kinesiotherapist organizations would cooperate and communicate, we could
have the symposium that would be beneficial to all concerned. Perhaps the
AAOP could take the lead on this?

The New Orleans meeting does sound interesting and I will definitely
consider attending

Tony,

Your suggestion for an international amputation surgery symposium is an
interesting one, although it might be more appropriate for AAOS than the
Academy's meeting. I'll mention it to next year's content committee.

Our program in New Orleans will probably be the BEST the Academy has ever
put together. The program is full with commitments from internationally
renowned speakers, such as: Malcolm MacLachlan from University of Dublin,
Ireland, M.E. Condie from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland,
Christopher Morris, MS from Great Britain, Bill Contayannis from Monash
University (LIVE via video hook-up from Melbourne, Australia), and Kenneth
Guidera, MD, David Kline, MD, Robert Gailey, PhD, PT, among others from the
United States. The quality of the content is truly outstanding!

In addition, we've borrowed a great idea from Europe and will be offering
two Clinical Technique sessions which devote 4 hours each over two days to
learning transfemoral casting or gait and physical assessment.

There's many more things that are new or different about the meeting, but I
don't want to turn this into a blatant commercial for the meeting in New
Orleans (Feb 25-28 -- right after Mardi Gras, see our website for details).
