Germany has established a net work of Institutes in developing countries
under the supervision of gtz,German agency for technical co-operation,and
they are offering the B.Sc degree in Prosthetics&Orthotics from these
institutes, and those graduates who have done their 3 years degree course
from any of these institues is called Orthopaedic Technologists.
Orthopaedic Technologist are providing the following services after the
completion of their 3 years degree course and 1 year internship.
1.They are able to diagnose and they can prescribe, under the supervision of
an orthopaedic surgeon.
2.They are responsible for all types of jobs ,,,,performed by the
orthopaedic technicians under their supervision.
3. They are comparable to Certified Prosthetist&Orthotist in the developed
countries at some extent, because an orthopaedic technologists is performing
the same kind of job here in developing countries as the certified
prosthetist&orthotist is performing in the developed countries.
Orthopaedic Technologists are basically those graduates who have done their
graduation in Prosthetics&Orthotics in Developing countries .
If you need the informations in details according to the categorized
division of Orthopaedic Technologist,,orthopaedic technicians,,etcthen i can
provide u all the related details categorized by the ISPO(International
Society of Prosthetics&Orthoics).
The term Orthopedic Technologist is used for example by the graduates from
TATCOT, a training center for P+O professionals in Moshi Tanzania that
educates students from all anglophone African countries. They have an ISPO
category I and an ISPO category II program, which both are held under the
responsibility of the Tumaini University. The category II program is a three
year program which leads to the title orthopedic technologist. This program
has about 4500 hours of teaching, of which 60% are practical. The students
treat patients in the third year in both Orthotics and Prosthetics. The
category I program is a four year program and leads to a B.Sc..
This program as other in Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Togo and El Salvador has
been a cooperation project of the german government, implemented through the
GTZ (German Technical Cooperation).
For more information you can visit the ISPO web site. www.ispo.ws
An orthopedic Tech may be a cast room tech, however this person also works
in
orthopedic surgeon's offices not only doing office-based casting but will
also
fit off-the-shelf orthoses, etc. On occasion, they may also do minor wound
care
for soft tissue edemas caused by the orthosis/prosthesis.
