QUESTION:

I am interested in getting options for providing ML stability for a BK
pt. who currently wears a joint/leather corset. The corset does not
need to un-weight the residual limb, but is essential for ML stability.
I remember seeing an ad for a laminated structure, similar to a knee
orthosis, that was attached proximal to a BK socket. Can anyone help me
contact companies that provide such a device?

ANSWERS

Townsend, Flextech (Deroyal) and Innovation Sports all are reported to
make a knee brace that will go over a BK Socket. I'm including
responses other than those that recommend these three options:

*I've seen others fabricate joints and use a graphite cage
type design that looked like a knee orthosis. Kinetic Research of Tampa
sells Ultra-G carbon graphite braid that works well for that.

*Fabricate this yourself by taking an impression of your patient's thigh
and then laminate a thigh shell. You can trim per your design to achieve
your stated goals. We have done this many times with good results.

*I had a similar situation. I got rid of the joints and
corset idea, and any laminated version so he didn't have all that bulk.
We used an otto bock polycentric hinge on the lateral side with a
thigh strap at mid-thigh. The pt loved it, lightweight and very effective.

*What about a high PTS with an alpha liner for extra suspension? I had
good success changing patients from corset and joints with a very short
residual limb to this. I have also made a co-poly type corset with
joints and velcro closures.

*We have in the past laminated the thigh section. I believe the way we
did it was to have the pt. donn the prosthesis and then cast the thigh
while locking the cast into the socket. We did an anterior shell with
posterior straps.

The design you may have seen could be the one designed by Pierre Botta
Switzerland for BK sportspeople (skiing is the big thing over there).
