ACA In Anaheim - A Lesson LearnedO&P Listserve Subscribers:
I enjoyed visiting with many O&P professionals and ACA members in Anaheim last week for the ACA annual convention.
I appreciate the overwhelming support of both groups to continue to encourage ACA, as the national amputee coalition and consumer organization, to fully activate their advocacy role to help generate proper coverages for prosthetic rehabilitation, support state and federal regulation, and to formally oppose competitive bidding for the delivery of comprehensive O&P services.
The ACA symposium held July 18-21 did provide many informative and social benefits for amputees.
However, in my opinion, ACA can accomplish so much more to help amputees obtain affordable and qualified prosthetic services by together formally addressing relevant and initiatives that are on the table now !
These issues, some which are described above, were identified and presented to both the ACA Public Policy and Advocacy Committee (PPAC) and to the ACA Board of directors on Friday July 19th in Anaheim.
It is our hope that the ACA Advocacy Committee will recommend to their Executive Board that ACA formally support the issues that were addressed.
It was unfortunate that the workshops were not held as scheduled under the previously appointed ACA National Program Chairman Dr. Lee Nattress's direction. Dr.Nattress and other members of the Amputee Information Exchange (AIE) organization
www.amp-info.org , had worked dillentgently to hold meaningful advocacy workshops that would of included direct amputee and professional participation for the workshops.
The outcome of the limited advocacy tracks held at the ACA conference last week, will be monitored and reported to those whom may want to stay informed and perhaps further encourage ACA to address meaningful advocacy issues.
I appreciate utilizing the OANDP-L as a terrific media forum for information dissemination to the O&P professional.
In the interim, I suggest subscribers read the current July O&P Edge articles titled:
Amputee Advocacy: What's Needed ? and
NegReg: NOMA at Work
Both of these comprehensive articles are accessible from the O&P web site at www.oandp.com or O&P Edge web site at www.oandp.com/edge
Phil Tamoush, a current ABC consumer board member, whom recently resigned from ACA, has also written a informative article in the Reader's Forum of the current July 15 O&P Business News. Those of you whom would want a copy of that please let me know since it is not electronically accessible.
We look forward to the ACA Public Advocacy Committee (PPAC) and to the Chairman Brad Ruhl's response and follow up on the ACA's Advocacy Committee's recommendations to properly address the issues presented at the advocacy meetings held in Anaheim. A united front, consisting of professionals and consumers and their respective membership organizations, can greatly influence the outcome of future coverage and of the profession currently being assaulted from all directions.
Personal regards,
