The Barr Foundation, in an effort to fulfill its mission to improve the quality of life for amputees, has commissioned and is presently coordinating the production of a surgical/medical film in May 2002 that will document the particular options of amputee surgery know as, the Ertl Procedure.
Three (3) candidates will be selected for the film:
(1) one primary
(2) one trans tibial secondary reconstruction candidate and
(3) one transfemoral amputee candidate
Selection will be made upon evaluation of Dr. Jan Ertl in Sacramento, California at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group.
Dr. John Ertl, a board director of the Barr Foundation since 1981 and his brother, William, further developed the procedures which had been pioneered by their father in Germany in 1918. Dr. John Ertl's son, Dr. Jan P. Ertl today performs a modified version of the procedures on a number of amputees per year.
My father a A/K and founder of the Barr Foundation, William G. Barr, underwent the procedure in November 1979.
As the result of the successful operation performed on my father, he was free of the pain that had taunted him since his amputation in 1970 !
Before his passing in 1987, Bill Barr, Drs. John and William Ertl vowed to make of such a film to demonstrate and promote this osteomyoplastic surgical procedure reconstruction, or Ertl Procedure, into real and widespread improvement for the millions of amputees worldwide who have suffered needlessly as the result of improper amputee surgery, and for those whom may undergo amputation surgery and loss of a limb in the future.
The Ertls have graciously agreed to participate in the production of this surgical film and documentary of amputation surgery for the Barr Foundation. Our non profit organization will in turn distribute the documentary to open minded surgeons, teaching hospitals, medical universities and colleges, prosthetists and amputees located in the USA and abroad , so that both patients and practitioners may make educated decisions as to the feasibility and option of undergoing the Ertl technique of amputee surgery.
Any and all potential candidates who not only want the Ertl Procedure, but also may wish to participate in the making of this film, should contact me to be referred to Dr.Ertl and the scheduling of a evaluation appointment.
Thank you,
