Dear Prosthetists, Orthotists, and other interested parties,
Thanks to all of you who replied regarding the Hoke orthoses.
According to Orthotics: Clinical Practice and Rehabilitation Technology
by Redford, Basmajian, and Troutman, the Hoke corset is a high fitting TLSO
or LSO of cotton or similar material with multiple stays, front opening, and
perineal straps. Hoke corsets have friction buckles that alternately pull
from the right to left, and left to right. The Hoke was used widely to
treat trunk instability caused from polio. It was introduced by Michael
Hoke (1874-1944), chief surgeon at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation in
about 1930.
Your replies:
When I worked at Santa Clara County Medical Center we had the corsets custom
made. These corsets had very little elastic and several Velcro closures with
loops for thumbs. These were fit to high level paras and low level quads.
they could donn and doff the corset themselves. I have not made any in 20
years, but they may be able to have one of the corset vendors make one. If
you like I can ask at our National Academy meeting next week if you do not
get a better answer.
Camp still makes them as well as Freeman and Truform. Hoke refers to hook
and eye closure which has been replaced by the easier velcro closure.
Any orthotist in her area should be able to make or had made a hoke corset.
They are not as popular as they used to be but are still available.
FREEMAN MANUFACTURING CO. STILL SELLS THE HOKE TYPE CORSET 1-800-253-2091.
Call Camp. They still make Hoke styles I believe. SPS carries them also.
1-800-767-7776.
Camp will still custom make it even though it's not in their catalogue
anymore.
Try Truform at 800-888-0458, and ask for Chester White.
I believe that they are still available from all the major manufacturers,
Freeman, Camp, Truform, etc.
Atlanta International has Hoke corsets
a Hoke corset is an LSO corset with an anterior closure and no adjustments
on the laterals sides for sizing. they are fabricated with distinct waist
grooves which are great for locating the corset and keeping them from
migrating.
in my orthotist days, i learned to make them from scratch. i think we
used to purchase off the shelf versions from the typical corset
manufacturers also, but since they weren't custom made, they still
migrated.
Camp sells them and will also do custom
Please contact Tribar Orthopedic 1-800 332-2844 They can make any corset you
wish.
Hoke style corsets are available from any orthotist from Freeman Orthotics.
They offer limited syles but they can be had for men and women. Freeman's #
is 1(800)253-2091
