Hi Tony,Gary,
Thank you for confirming that the word of supporting advocacy also appears in the Academy's mission statement, as it does in ACA's.
The many supporters for the ACA Advocacy Workshops are also pleased to hear from the president of your respected national professional organization, the Academy, would participate in the requested, but yet to be scheduled ACA Advocacy Meeting Workshop next July.
Although, supporters of the issue have received no confirmation that the workshop will be scheduled nor whom might be the committee members, it is inspiring that the Academy, particularly the NEW Academy, and members of the Academy are willing to participate support the advocacy workshops. There seems to be very little lack of support to schedule these workshops yet it has yet to be added to the program!
Please provide the Academy member's name that you eluded to so that we can post him as a support/participant in the workshop.
It has always been the overall goal for your organization, to advance the quality of care provided to the physically challenged individual. Many of the AAOP chapters have contributed invaluable support, shoulder to shoulder, with consumer advocacy organizations, for successful regulation efforts in the six states that currently require a state license to provide O&P services.
The Academy's participation with ACA, the consumer advocacy organization, in meaningful workshops may set the stage in providing proper health service for the over 41 million people under the age of 65 that are currently uninsured and the additional one million that are coming on stream each year !
The reality is that the decline in private insurance spending and Medicare and Medicaid growth at unsustainable rates of increase, is largely due to the private sector's failure to adequately provide for the health care needs of the populations covered by these programs.Together, profession and consumer may meet on common ground and truly advocate on behalf of both entities to encourage health care legislative reform for the disabled.
What a testimonial it is to our advocacy organization effort to include the participation and support of so many consumers and professionals, across the nation, for a ACA Advocacy workshop, and not one, but two presidents of your national professional organization, Bob Brown and Gary Lamb, (past 1998 and present 2001).
This is indeed sending a strong message to ACA, and the profession ,of the importance and present timing to propose and support advocacy issues now when the proposed legislative policies that will effect the quality and proper O&P health care are on the table, now.
The support of legislative and regulatory activities becomes a priority when the content of those activities adversely effects the professionalism of the practitioner.
Bill Schumann,CPO,1999 President, American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists
We look forward to receiving additional support for the ACA Advocacy Workshop from your AAOP Chapters whom may reply to the listserve as a further indication of unity by your organization's members.
Regards,
Tony Barr

Hi Tony,
For the record the grammatically correct version of our mission statement, perhaps not seen by the masses is:
The mission of the Academy, as the pre-eminent professional organization in orthotics and prosthetics, is to promote high standards in patient care through advocacy, education, literature and research.
Our Vision: Professionals providing better care through knowledge.
The Academy is pleased to currently have a practitioner serving on the ACA Medical Advisory Committee, and intends to be in Anaheim for the next ACA meeting. My understanding from sources near ACA is they have arranged to address advocacy issues at this meeting. The Academy will attend that forum to gain more knowledge as to the challenges the amputees face and where the Academy may see opportunities to help our members provide better care.
We look forward to any format that will allow us to gain better insights to the challenges those we serve face.
Respectfully,
Gary A. Lamb LPO, CO, FAAOP
