I have a patient/client present with a dislocated left shoulder, She has been
to an orthopedic surgeon, and several brace shops. She dislocates both
anterior and posterior. She has always been loose but after a fall, landing
on the anterior aspect of the shoulder she now cannot keep the shoulder in
place. She presented with a rib belt with Velcro strap around the humerus,
her elbow extended and her arm around her back so her hand is in the right
back pocket of her pants. When I flex her elbow and bring her arm in front
of her at waist height, the humerus just pops ant/post with what she says is
great pain. She has no funding and thus has been around the block of
suppliers. I wish to help her but I am not an expert in this condition. They
have her going to PT to strengthen but she has a 3/5 mm tear involving the
posterior superior labrum. The rotator cuff is in good shape. The patient is
well muscled and worked construction until this. As I understand the
function of the shoulder, the many muscles attach to the Labrum and the
Labrum attaches to the bone. Surgery is probably the answer but with no
funding, surgery may be a ways off.

A history search of this reveals that in times past, they heated a sword and
then placed the sword under the arm pit, then removed the blade and bandaged
the arm to the body, the scare tissue then adhered and stabilized the
shoulder.

Any orthotic suggestions would be welcome????
