Eric,

Please, before making a blanket statement based on misinformation check
out the real deal per BOC certification.

With all due respect for the ABC credential, which I do consider a
standard bearer for the profession, they did drop the ball. They left a
lot of people caught in a catch 22, or lock out position, who had
been practicing in the field for years. I find it ironic that for years
no one ever minded that I saw and treated patients, until I added the BOC
after my name. It's amazing how peoples attitudes will change with the
addition of those three letters. It's more amazing how people will risk
the professional liability associated with the misrepresentation of that
credential, to serve their own self interest not the professions.

I tried to pursue the ABC credential. I had one employer offer to buy
my dream, pay me enough to never want to bother...and then stood in my
way to prevent it. Another lied to me about the associate's degree
pathway (yes I've been at this that long enough that I was around to
qualify with an associates degree and education/experience) telling me
the pathway had been closed. When one of the journals published an
article on the pathway still being open but about to close(almost a year
later), he shrugged his shoulders and commentated on the can of worms
that they had just opened. Then when I went to apply to the schools, I
was put on the associates list by ABC, but told by the schools that
without a bachelors they will not accept any applicants, only to be told
later that they were excepting associate degree candidates if you know
the right people, who are willing to pull the right strings. (That
statement was made to me by someone intimately involved in the ABC
educational process.) Now I will also admit that I dropped the ball in
this process on several occasions as well. Suffice it to say that the
process left me looking for alternatives. In my case, BOC provided an
alternative to the frustration, exclusivity and patronage that I had run
into pursuing the ABC credential.

I will agree with you on this point, the longer we spend time and money
trashing our own (and I know that is anathema to some) the more
encroachment we will see from other professions. Every time I walk into
a nursing home and see the closet full of orthosis that the PT's are
using to treat patients (as long as they fit close enough) I'm reminded
of how we are fighting this battle on the wrong front.

The time to take the field is now, before the troops that amass to oppose
can win by shear numbers.

OK, I'm ready ...Let the hate mail begin...please no viruses this time!
