I'm very glad that Mr. Hatch decided to share this anecdote, as it is
extremely relevant. This IS, IMHO, the essence of our profession. Regardless
of who else has the background knowledge (e.g. anatomy, biomechanics etc.),
it is _this_ that separates practitioners from certified clinicians. I'm
splitting hairs here over the semantics, and you can agree or not, but P/O
seems to suffer from an image problem (to whit what's the difference? I can
get my XYZ cheaper at the drugstore or from my chiropractor or whatever)
and it is the idea embodied by Mr. Hatch's story that finally addresses that
elusive difference. The question now is how to turn that into an advertising
campaign to educate the consuming public, without slighting all the
practitioners, particularly in light of the fact that many don't know what
an orthotist or a prosthetist is. Any ideas here would be most welcome.
