I appreciate Mr. Fries making me aware of the discussion taking place within
the O&P List regarding vacancies on the Florida Board of Orthotists and
Prosthetists. I have also spoken with him regarding his concerns about
pending appointments to the Board by Governor Jeb Bush.
To clarify part of Mr. Fries' written remarks, Governor Bush does not
nominate individuals to the various health care regulatory boards.
Individuals who are interested in being considered for appointment by the
Governor complete an application and return it to the Governor's office.
From that list of applicants, the Governor makes his appointments to the
Board when vacancies occur. Anyone who believes they are eligible for
appointment can apply for consideration if they complete the gubernatorial
questionnaire. Practitioners and consumer members who are appointed by the
Governor to the Board must also be confirmed by the Florida Senate.
I trust these comments will assist in understanding how the process of being
appointed to the Board takes place.
