Relative to orthotics only: My contention is that conventional orthoses
refers to a metal structured orthosis often covered with leather and the like
soft good. Modular orthoses refers to systems of orthoses that are sold in
kit or modular form to be assembled by the provider in accordance to the
individual patient needs.

Orthosis- Metal and leather are considered conventioal, plastic with components considered modular
Prosthesis- Exoskeletal considered conventional, endoskeletal considered modular
3 David Hendricks, CPO, FAAOP
If you are talking about the language in the US L-codes -- and the words are
widely used to mean this outside of them -- conventional prosthesis means
exoskeletal; modular prosthesis means endoskeletal. Conventional orthosis
often means an all-metal frame leg brace rather than the thermoplastic which
is widely preferred now days. A modular orthosis is infrequently used, and
refers so manufacturers who make metal component parts that can be exchanged
easily in a metal orthosis.
