Dear List Members:
Below are the responses to my original question:
I'd like your input re. the wisdom of using a cosmetic glove other than the
standard Otto Bock PVC glove for a patient with a myoelectric hand. She's
getting the glove permanently stained very quickly due to exposure to ink
and dyes.
When using the Centri silicone gloves several years ago, I had to reinforce
the thumb and finger tips with a clear silicone cement to make them last for
more than a few weeks.
Has anyone found a better solution than this?

Tony,
There is a glove on the market that does everything you require. It hardly
stains, you can wipe off pencil and biro marks with a rag. It's not cheap
but very efficient and its appearence is excellent. For more information
email David Wong <Email Address Redacted> Hope this is of help to you.

Tony, I cannot comment specifically on a good glove for the myoelectric, but
I recently investigated other manufacturers (other than my old standby-
Realastic) and found that no glove is really any better than another at
resisting stains. I was told the silicone gloves were discontinued.
I can offer a tech tip in helping to extend the life of the gloves. Always
use powder to don the gloves. If oil, Vaseline, Silicone or anything oil
based is used, the glove will discolor faster and absorb stains faster.
Powder and heat the gloves well. Again, I cannot offer this tip for the
silicone, as I am unfamiliar with them. Good luck.

Hi Tony, A number of the custom silicone glove manufacturers have made their
gloves up in a hand shell shape to fit the Otto Bock hands.

We have had good results with custom silicone covers made for myoelectric
prosthesis by LifeLike Lab. They are expensive but in the USA we have had no
problem getting them authorized and they are by far the most cosmetic covers
available. AAD's Patient Coordinator has worn one for 6 or 7 years and
although touch ups were required she has been happy with it. Hope this helps.

works closely with the prosthetist to gather all pertinent info necessary
for creating a prosthesis long-distance which is a replication of, and
mirror of, the extant limb. This is a matching hand (Limb), not just a
similar hand. The process captures all surface detail, including
fingerprints and is made from the highest-grade tear resistant silicone and
permanent lightfast colors. The coloring is internal to the material and
therefore does not wear off or fade. Each Hand is custom painted to match
the subtle and distinctive personal patterns of each patient. The nails are
UV resistant composites and a standard component, which gives the
prosthesis an exceptionally realistic appearance. They are suspension fit
or can be fabricated to cover another device such as a myoelectric hand.
The process is easy, takes about four weeks and is very competitively priced.
Life expectancy is 5-7 years depending on care and use.
