Dear List,
HISTORY: I have a prosthetic case involving a 17 y/o male with bilateral
fibular hemimelia. He is currently wearing Iceross Comfort shuttle lock
systems, exoskeletal design with Seattle Lite Feet. He is dissatisfied with
the shuttle lock system because he says they are uncomfortable and tug on
his residual limbs. I have always stayed away from shuttle lock systems on
extremely boney residual limbs and can see why he may be having problems.
Also, the alignment is causing problems, I believe, which cannot be easily
corrected with the exoskeletal design.
Recently, I fit him in bilateral transtibial suction sockets with the USMC
expulsion valves (3-prong connector w/ dome valve kit), endoskeletal design,
and Springlite Low Profile Advantage feet. I am using the Iceross Iceflex
Endurance suspension sleeves for the first time because it seems be of high
quality. I am using a 3mm Alpha liner.
I have used the USMC expulsion valve in the past with success. However, on
one side I cannot seem to get suction. Suspension is adequate without
suction but not optimal. I have switched valves and sleeves but still there
is no suction. I have determined that the O-ring on the valve is not
sealing in the hole of the 3-prong connector possibly because the hole is
bored out. I'm thinking of using a gasket sealer to prevent leakage of air.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH VARIOUS EXPULSION VALVES AND SUGGESTIONS AS
TO HOW TO FIX MY PROBLEM?
This is the first time I have used the Springlite Advantage. I chose it for
its multiaxial motion, lightweight, and low maintenance. So far the patient
and I am impressed with the performance of the foot. The foot motion is
impressive. I am concerned about the durability because the carbon plate is
very thin. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THE SPRINGLITE ADVANTAGE?
Using the Springlite Advantage with the USMC expulsion valve creates an air
noise in the pylon. With standard SACH foot adapters I do not get this
noise. I believe the male pyramid attachment on the Advantage allows too
much air flow creating a noise. I hope the foaming of the foot shell
eliminates this whoosing sound. WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR ELIMINATING
THE AIR NOISE?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
