Setting up an African prosthetics clinic from scratch...?

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine (an experienced prosthetist) has been approached by a
Christian mission to go to Uganda to work. She is interested in the
project and has provisionally agreed to go. The catch: apart from a 2
week trip to Mauritania she knows little about prosthetics in such an
environment. There is no limb centre there at present but there is a
small hospital. She must raise the funds for the running of the centre as
well as fit and make the limbs.

Does anyone on the list have any experience of this sort of project
(perhaps even specific to this area of Africa)? If so any advice (and I
MEAN any advice) would be gratefully received. Specific areas of concern
are the issues of appropriate technology vs available technology; staff
training; equipment and materials etc.

Of course, just names and addresses of others involved in the field would
also be very useful.

I will forward any replies to her. Many thanks.
