Leather ankle support? - reply summary

My original question was:
I've gotten in a script for a custom fitted ankle support made of leather.
Does anyone know of such a thing?
Thanks
The operative word here were custom fitted (as opposed to custom made),
and leather. I've checked most of the sources mentioned and have not found
a leather ankle support available. It seems that vinyl has replaced leather
in this application.
Fortunately there seem to be an abundance of sources for fabrication of a
custom support.

Ted,
You can try the Arizona Ankle Brace
I personally am not fond of it, but it is leather and might fit your needs.
They seem to take a long time to get them done also.
The Company is Custom Footwear- 1480-461-1940

Hi Ted, The only one I know of anymore isn't real but synthetic leather. SPS
distributes it for Truform Pg.395 SPS catalouge.
BTW, Thanks again for the suggestion of the Gaitmaster knee for my long AK a
few weeks back. One other prosthetist suggested it also. It worked out great.

Ted,
I,ve been making them for years. A good example is in the Illustrated
Guide to P&O, L 1904. I think they are kind of fun to make.(a little time
consuming, but fun) Any questions on manufacture, please call
541-776-4948.

Ted,
Pel had a nice selection, of neoprene, canvas, mesh, (with and without
inserts for stability).......but only one that is synthetic leather.
Becker will make a leather one to a mold of the foot and ankle for approx.
275.00. I don't think you want that expense.
I would think the patient would want something he could occasionally launder.

Ted,
The old fashion way. Take a cast of the patients limb, order cow hide and
streach/mold leather around the cast. You need expertise from years ago.

Ted,
Take a cast and send it to Becker. They do an awesome job!

There are a number of leather ankle gauntlets available from Camp and Truform.
Also find out if you could substitute a Mc David or Swedo Ankle support.
Good luck,

The only custom made leather ankle foot orthosis on the market today is the
Arizona AFO, also known as the Custom Arizona Brace. I understand they have
over 200 facilities accross the United states that cast for this orthosis.
Information can be found on there web page: www.customfootwear.com

Mr Trower;
My appologies if you took my comments as a personal attack on you or your
abilities. They were in no way ment to be taken that way. Many
manufacturers, such as Knit-Rite and Truform, have made Leather ankle
guantlets that have been available for over twenty years or longer. And yes
I may have gotten Custom Fit and Custom Made confused.
I do,however , maintain that my original comment about many Orthotists of
today do not know how to actually make something. When I recieve an Rx for a
Custom Ankle Splint I still begin the fabrication process by taking an
impression simular to an AFO mold and fabricate the leather splint to that
mold.

This sounds like something they made at American Prosthetics in Iowa City.

Try one of the custom shoe Co.'s or a local orthotic central fab.

Ted,
I'm pretty sure that OTC makes a leather ankle support.
-------------------------------------------------------
Ted, in St. Louis, we are aware of two leather anklets custom made with 1/8
plastic sandwiched between the two layers of leather. One supplier is
Synetics in Arizona and the other is in Minnesota called the Arizona Brace.
The Arizona brace is patented. I have been pleased with the effectiveness of
the leather gauntlet AFO.
Good luck,
Barb

Check Arizona Brace (do a web search)> They do a custom from your cast with
PolyPro inner reinforcement. Works great for blown PTT.
BTW, They require that you sign a licensing agreement to do them. I have done
15 or so over the past year with excellent results.

What a shame it is today that many of the Orthotist's of today dont know
how to make anything.
Iwould start by taking an impressoin of the patients foot and ankle and go
from there-----

Ted-
Scan the journal for an article on the use of these supports. I think it
was from Iowa. In any case, the ankle gauntlets worked very well in the
studt. I have since started to use them on heavy duty types, and have ACOR
make them. Just cast like an AFO, but remember that adjustment are very
difficult later. They sandwich thin PE between the horse and cow. Good
results but a 6 week break in period to soften the leather. Best Regards,

Thanks to all who contributed their assistance. Once again this list is
shown to to be an invaluable resource for the independent practicioner.
I will be fitting the client with a custom molded leather ankle support.
Thanks again
