Victoria ,your recent summary of prosthetic coverage internationally was very interesting.I appreciated the information.
The O&P industry is the only health care profession that remains unregulated in the U.S. Although several states have or are in the process of requiring licensure in their respective states, the federal govt. requires no minimum standards of education or training for providers of these services .However there is current legislation that has been filed(see below).
Do any of the countries you have mentioned in your summary require a license to practise the O&P trade?
Are there oversight compliance agencies that monitor the quality of work and determine pricing of components?

William G. Barr Amputee Protection Act of 1999

U.S. Congressman Robert Wexler(D-Fla) recently introduced federal legislation which would regulate the orthotic and prosthetic profession.Today, states require indivisuals to get a license before cutting hair ,manucuring nails or running a tattoo parlor. Only a few of states require licenses for providing orthotics or prosthetics. This bill ,named after the founder of the Barr Foundation, will have a dramatic impact on preventing fraudulent medicare claims which cost taxpayers over $8 million a year.Wexler said.
Anthony T. Barr explains This legislation not only will lessen the fraud and abuse in the industry but it also encourages the federal government to require educational standards for practitioners providing custom O&P services whom are requesting reimbursement from medicare.
.
Once educational requirements, oversight and accountablity have been obtained by regulation, meaningful efforts can then be made to educate private and governmental reimbursers as to what constitutes a high level of prosthetic and orthotic service and proper reimbursement requirements to provide such high level of service. Presently, pleas for increased O&P coverage fall on deaf ears because there are no mandatory educational requirements or accountability required from providers.
