Thank you all for your responses. Here is the question I asked and the
responses I received:
Question: A local orthopedic surgeon has done a posterior shoulder dislocation
repair on a hospital patient and wants a brace that externally rotates the
shoulder joint. I thought of an airplane splint. Is this a valid orthosis for
this purpose? Is there a better choice?
Responses:
1. Use an airplane splint (6 responses). Two mentioned Donjoy's as inexpensive
and effective.
2. Use a gunslinger splint (one response). Orthomerica was mentioned.
3. Use an abduction pillow by Donjoy. (one response).
Because the physician did not want shoulder abduction, but only external
rotation, we used a gunslinger brace (by USMC) with good results.
Thanks, again, for the help.
