List of replies for flail arm orthosis: Thanks to all!!!!!
Hello all! I have been recently asked a question from a colleague
who is located in the Pennsylvania area. He has recently been
challenged with comming -up with a functional orthosis for a flail
glenohumeral joint due to a brachial plexus injury. He says that the
pt has wrist and hand function but, partial elbow function and no true
shoulder motion. I didn't get the nerve(s) that were injured. Sounds
like C 5-6 axillary and musculotaneous nerves.
He has called Fillauer with no luck. He (a practioner) states that
the physician that he is dealing with has prescribed this before and a
German man made the particular orthosis he is wanting. The practioner
states that the system would have some sort of shoulder cap with a
conventional type cable system. Does anyone know of such a system?
Can anyone recommend anything for my friend? I will be sure to post
all replies. Thanks!!!

I have used the steeper flail arm orthosis with an excellent
functional
and cosmetic result
Liberty Mutual was the supplier at that time and they were quite
helpful
please feel free to contact me if you need further assistance

at the AOPA meeting there was a booth from a company named Medstat
from
Tennessee, They have an orthosis designed for shoulder subluxation and
the
elbow is positioned at 90x. the hand is supported but can be
functional. Give
them a call for a brochure: 901-452-5697.........let me know if you
use it
and how it is. Thanks -- Stephanie D. Langdon-Bash, CPO, FAAOP

The engr and rehab people in Delft, Netherlands have developed some
really
nice orthoses for bracial plexis injury. Jan Cool presented their work
at
an Academy meeting or maybe it was the ISPO meeting in Chicago. I
believe
the orthoses are commercially available from Camp in the US.

Have you considered the Stanmore flail arm orthosis (and all its
variants)?

In response to your friend's situation I would try contacting
Ultraflex in
Malvern, PA. They have some pretty inovative upper extremity braces
that
could probably help his patient. The number is 610-647-6607. Good
Luck.-
