Hi Everyone,

Orthotists and Orthotic Technicians... how do you replicate old beloved AFOs?

When a patient desires something that fits like an old ‘glove’ aka an AFO they have worn for many many years we often choose to backfill a device.

At Boundless Biomechanical Bracing (Mississauga, ON) the backfilling process consists of taking the old AFO, sealing it with plaster bandage, depending on the shape and material we may use a separator, and filling the negative mold with plaster as you would a cast. This process is guaranteed to be messy, but the bigger challenge is when you are trying to replicate a very circumferential orthosis or narrow ESR AFO. In these cases it is either difficult to get the plaster out after filling (circumferential) or difficult to seal (ESR).

Does your clinic occasionally need to replicate old AFOs?
Do you backfill with plaster?
Do you use alginate?
Is this a challenge out there that needs a better solution?
