Hello all. Diabetic orthoses and shoes are obviously the bain of our
existence, but a necessity. As Medicare puts more and more onerous rules
on us it seems those we need help from are less and less cooperative. I
have a patient who saw a podiatrist who prescribed him diabetic shoes and
inserts, then sent a referral to the patient's primary care physician. The
primary care physician saw him but the patient didn't tell him it was for
diabetic foot orthoses and shoes. I sent them the appropriate
documentation after seeing the patient and the doctor called upset that he
had to be involved at all. I explained that in order for medicare to cover
the prescribed items that I needed the patient to have a face to face visit
with him about them. He said he didn't want to be involved and that he
would just sign off on the podiatrist's paperwork. I don't know if this is
going to work. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of
situation? I don't really know what to do in this situation. Should I
have every diabetic patient sign an ABN and collect from them if I lose a
RAC audit?
