Hi Everyone,
Here is part two. Probably the most eye-opening portion of the survey and highly unexpected, was the comment section. This portion has caused me to re-structure my research questions and interview questions for my dissertation. The responses that participants wrote down will remain anonymous as promised however certain themes will be outlined. I resisted posting certain comment themes for fear of loss to privacy. 146 participants took the time to comment. I will not post or publish the actual comments as I want to respect the privacy of those who commented. If you have any questions, please send a private e-mail.
Comments(Gender)
Male: 65 (33.5%) Commented, (Overall, 194 responded to survey or 56.89%)
13 reported never been bullied ( simply stated “Never”)
Multiple males criticized the survey.
Multiple males considering changing jobs.
7 changed jobs.
Multiple males mentioned other people leaving profession.
Comments on students coming out of school know nothing.
Mention was made of seeking counseling, possible divorce due to work environment.
Female: 81 (55.1%) Commented, (Overall, 147 responded to survey or 43.11%)
Only one female reported her long career was bully free in the comments (Two mentioned criticisms of their work)
18 comments regarding behavior considered actual sexual harassment (22.2%).
Multiple females mentioned employment changes (changed jobs, thinking of leaving the profession or have left, left clinical for manufacturer or teaching).
Multiple comments relating to pregnancy: (2 mentioned these were questions during interview, one was criticized for weight gain, 1 related to negative reactions wanting to care for her child).
There was mention of racial comments frequently at place of employment.
Multiple females harassed by doctor or patient.
1 mentioned multiple friend’s leaving profession from her class.
Comments made about seeking counseling (Mental distress).
General
Comments were made regarding behavior by instructors at the schools.
Comments mentioned bosses who are former students (This saddens me on a personal note).
A big thank you to the Canadian practitioner explaining how the work environment is in Canada.
A few of my former students were proud to explain their good work environment and in return, I’m proud of what you have become. Thank you for sharing.
Overall, the survey paints a picture of behavior trends that need to be addressed. Recently, the profession has posted initiatives to address diversity, inclusion, and harassment, so hopefully these results provide a foundation for designing policy to enhance a healthy workplace environment. Once again, if anyone has questions please reach out to me. I will be enlisting volunteers to interview for my dissertation so once I defend my proposal and receive IRB approval, let me know if you are interested.
