I love theOANDP list serv! I got lots of quick replies with many ideas I hasn't come up with yet after a long search of catalogs. I appreciate the quick, to the point, and respectful responses.
* Nylon stocking saturated with silicone caulking works rather well regardless of size. Make sure you put lots of initial flexion in the knee.
* I use a company out of Florida called Prosthetics Research Specialists. They custom shape and spray the skins. its beautiful work too and im sure they would more than satisfy the patient. Hope this helps.
* Find a stocking that fits and use Rit dye.
* I appreciate your question and admire your determination to find a suitable material. We use Dark Brown Lambskin, 1.5 to 2 oz
Here's a link to the SPS webpage featuring the product, though I imagine it is available many places:

Also, the foam cover itself is not specific. Though we use DAW BK foam blocks from time to time, any foam will do.
* Ritz dye for stockings or paint a custom skin. I recommend just dying some ped size stockings to start. I usually use OB. Its easy, besides the child often decides to go without a cover pretty quickly (after they have torn up a few being a kid).
* Using OB Caucasian colored stockinette and RIT dye you can achieve any shade desired. Before dyeing thoroughly wash the stockinette to remove oils and cloth guards. Mix the RIT shades to achieve the desired skin tones. You need to adjust the boiling time, usually much longer, to get saturated color. When leg finished and covered add several layers of women's hose to protect dyed stocking and adjust color.
* I would always insist they take a 2 piece cover. One piece foam and nylon only exist in one AA shade. A poor cosmetic choice. With 2 piece you can have them custom sprayed. We did them in house but when pressed for time I used Pel supply.
* Maybe use an otto bock prosthetic stocking? They have darker colors, and you can do a BK stocking ;-) Otto bock stocking over a soft foam cover, you can shape the foam down to their size.
* One thought is to contact Fredslegs.com. They sell sleeves in 18 and 21 lengths in Brown and those may work for Your cosmesis.
* In the past I have colored OB Ultraflex coating negroid and painted it onto a nylon hose covering a shaped foam cover. When dry it has a plasticized feeling. If you like you can place socks or hose over it, too. Fairly durable.
* We would use a regular firm foam cover and cover it with the dark color pelite. You can seam it in the posterior - bevel one side, heat it up, wrap it around and back bevel the other end. I am not sure if the darker pelite comes in different thicknesses.
