Hi Paul,
If you could, would you re-post this query for me? I have not gotten any answers from anyone (except those wanting to hear answers as well), and I know there has to be someone out there who has been through this situation.

I appreciate this.
Kristin

Good day Listers,

I have a gentleman with a right transfemoral amputation, done when he was a 20 year old due to osteosarcoma. He is now 56, and has led a very active lifestyle (hunting, fishing, etc.) and is experiencing a lot of hip pains. He has had a couple of cortisone injections and he feels the next step may be right hip replacement. He came in today with questions regarding what to expect in terms of rehab post operatively. Most people are expected to be up and ambulatory after their surgeries within 24 hours at our facility. However, my patient will have tremendous swelling and will likely not fit into his suction socket.

I am sure he is not the first amputee to need a THA on his amputated side. Can you all shed some light on this situation and tell us about your experiences? What issues does he have to look forward to and, what can I do as his Prosthetist to improve his functional outcome?

He uses a pull in sock to don his suction (skin fit) socket. His prosthesis is a semi-rigid inner socket with Green Dot valve, rigid frame with cut-outs, Endolite SNS hydraulic with Black Max frame, Bock Axtion foot with a Bock torsion adapter.

Thanks again for your advice. Have a great weekend everyone.

Kristin
